We undertook comparative research in Africa, Asia and Europe
The TRAFIG team carried out empirical research on protracted displacement and displaced people’s coping strategies, their local, translocal and transnational networks and the role of mobilities in Africa (DR Congo, Ethiopia, Tanzania), Asia (Jordan, Pakistan, Lebanon, Iran) and Europe (Greece, Italy, Germany, The Netherlands).
Africa
Democratic Republic of the Congo
In the DRC, colleagues from Leiden University and the Social Science Centre for African Development (KUTAFITI) jointly carried out research on internal displacement and the network connections of IDPs living in Bukavu, South Kivu. In total, 500 people participated in their study.
Ethiopia
Researchers from Addis Ababa University and BICC (Bonn International Centre of Conflict Studies) investigated the conditions of Eritrean refugees in Ethiopia together. More than 600 people participated in their study in Tigray and Afar Regions as well as in Addis Ababa.
Tanzania
Practitioners from Dignity Kwanza – Community Solutions and researchers from Leiden University collaborated in their study of Congolese and Burundian refugees in Dar es Salaam. The Tanzanian case study is based on the stories and experiences of over 80 people.
Asia
Jordan
Researchers from Yarmouk University and CMI (Chr. Michelsen Institute) worked together in studying the conditions of displacement of Syrian refugees in northern Jordan. In total, 530 people participated in their study.
Pakistan
In Pakistan, SHARP (Society for Human Rights & Prisoners’ Aid) and BICC (Bonn International Centre of Conflict Studies) looked into the situation of displaced Afghans, their livelihoods and networks across the country. More than 400 people participated in their study.
Lebanon
A smaller study with 15 participants was carried out in Tripoli, Lebanon, to get a better comparative understanding of the patterns of Syrian’s displacement in the region. It was led by a researcher from CMI (Chr. Michelsen Institute).
Iran
In Iran, a small study was carried out by an Iranian colleague to complement research on Afghans mobilities and protracted displacement in the region. 15 people were interviewed.
Europe
Italy
Colleagues from FIERI (Forum of International and European Research on Immigration) investigated migrants’ marginalisation and conditions of protracted displacement across several sites in Italy. 540 people, mainly Eritreans, West Africans and South Asians, participated in the Italian study.
Greece
In Greece, researchers from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki undertook research on the Northern Aegean Islands, in Athens and Thessaloniki. They spoke with more than 450 people, predominantly from Syria, Afghanistan, Congo and Pakistan.
Germany
The study in Germany focused on refugees’ journeys to Europe and people’s transnational networks. More than 70 people were interviewed for the study led by BICC (Bonn International Centre of Conflict Studies).
Netherlands
Researchers affiliated with Leiden University undertook exploratory research on the local embeddedness and transnational networks of Congolese migrants living in The Netherlands. They carried out 7 interviews.
